Mining

There are two types of amber mines in the Dominican Republic:
- In the Cordillera Septentrional (around the Santiago-Puerto Plata region) amber is mined by means of more or less horizontal tunnels cut in the rocks, as shown in this reproduction of a mine.
- In other areas and in the Cordillera Oriental (around the El Valle - Hato Mayor areas) amber is mined from vertical shafts dug in sand or clay.
Depending on the soil or sedimentary composition, different tools are used. The conditions are harsh in which the miners must work. High temperatures and 100% humidity at the base of the mines, create sauna-like conditions. The miners who reveal the beauty and wonders of Dominican amber to daylight deserve our gratitude and admiration.
